Assignment 8

After rereading this essay, I have found many sources that Ruzich uses, and then takes their information and portrays it throughout the rest of her essay. On page 431 she references Pendergrast and Wild, as they mention how the global coffee industry is the second most valuable trading commodity, next to oil. She then continues to remind the reader throughout how large of a commodity coffee is, and how valued it is in today’s society.
The second source I found, located on page 432 resonated with me, because it was a source from Schwartz wrote, saying how successful the Starbucks corporation has been, and at the time his article was printed, Starbucks was opening three or four stores a day. This exemplified to me that as stated in the previous source, that coffee is a highly important commodity in today’s society.
Located on page 435 was a source by Yang and Schwartz. Which talked about how Starbucks attempts to link coffee with fine wine, and that coffee is the last acceptable addiction in society. Which again linked with the previous two sources talking about how coffee is so highly looked upon.
My last source, by Shultz, which is found on page 436, talks about how Starbucks uses the social experience and rituals commonly found in Italian Cafés and British pubs to bring a feeling of belonging and connections. Linked with the previous sources, all of these ideas and facts tie in together to make the true Starbucks experience, which Ruzich then uses to bring her point on how Starbucks is purely an advertising campaign. By looking at these sources, I have seen how cleverly Ruzich has tied all of her sources together, but then was also able to make a legitimate argument on her views of the coffee industry, and more importantly the Starbucks empire.

Assignment 7

As discussed in class, the story we heard on 60 minutes was highly bias, and only focused on one side of the story as well as only had a limited number of speakers.
By watching this clip today, I clearly saw how it is important to look at as many points of views or perspectives for a story as you can, before you present that information to your readers. At this point I think I have already begun the right process, and that is finding sources with different points of view on Facebook and other social networking types.
By looking at the research I have already done, I have found many articles on what psychologist and other professionals think of social networking and the scientific view of the impact on users and the general population as a result. By looking at how professionals respond to social networking and seeing the pros/cons that they do, I think I have a good idea on what they deems as the impact whether it be positive or negative. However, I have realized that I need to do much more research when it comes to seeing the viewpoint of other people such as users, and maybe being allowed to do personal research to see how my peers respond to social networking. Seeing as social networking impacts so heavily on students. Whether it’s checking a social networking site during class, or spending a full night on the site while doing homework or instead of homework, no matter where or when, social networking is in and revolves around our lives. It is important that when doing my research that I remember that although it is important to see how professionals respond to social networking, it is very important that I keep the users as well involved. Because I myself am a very heavy user of social networking sites, specifically that of Facebook, I think it’s important to keep myself as well as my peer’s involved with the information that I am laying on the table, and the things I am giving the reader.

Assignment 6: Source 8 & 9 & 10

Source 8:
Minding myspace: Balancing the benefits and risks of students' online social networks. (2007). Education Digest, Oct, 2007, Vol.73(2), P.4(5), 73(2), 4.
The article I have found discusses the benefits and the consequences of having a social networking profile. While it discusses the cruel things students have and will do to each other such as cyber bullying, and putting themselves into the wrong place by meeting random people from across the country,
I think this article shows the necessary precautions that people interacting on social networking sites should take. This article brings up a valid point about not always knowing whom your talking to, if you add random people that you don’t know from personal experience. I think this article helps to exploit the cruel side of social networking.

Source 9:

Real and perceived attitude agreement in social networks. (2010). Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 2010, Vol. 99(4), 99(4), 611.
This article talks about how the views of facebook friends, although they may similar, in reality may be a little more different then other wise noted before. This article uses facebook as a platform in which they can study the topic they are trying to discuss.
I think this article is somewhat related to my topic because it discusses how they used facebook as a platform in order to survey people about how they felt about a certain topic.  This shows the different ways in which social networking sites, facebook in specific are currently being used for means other then just between friends. This shows that things such as advertising, and survey, as well as other ways of study and attracting people are widely being used in our society.

Source 10:
Patton, C. (2009). The social networking express. Professional Safety, 54(11), 5.
This last article brings up a very good point. It talks about how much facebook and other social networking sites are the key to socialization as well as communication in today’s society. The author talks about how sending a typed or hand written letters is so out of date, however sending an email, writing on someone’s wall, or tweeting has taken over. This author also endorses social media and takes it to be a very productive and positive source for information.
I think this source is a great idea to keep in mind for my paper. Due to the fact that social networking, and the internet has taken over society, I think the points in which this author makes about jumping on the bandwagon because this is where communication is headed is very true, and a great example of the ever changing world of technology.

Assignment 6: Source 6 & 7

Source 6:
Muscanell, N. , & Guadagno, R. (2012). Make new friends or keep the old: Gender and personality differences in social networking use. Computers in Human Behavior, 28(1), 107-112.

This article talks about a study done that compares the difference of how gender and personality influences people in regards to social networking sites. This study talks about the way that men and women differ in what they expect to come from social networking, and in return how they spend their time, and who they talk to while their on said site. This study was done on undergraduate students who had either a facebook or a myspace, or even both.
I think yet again this is another great source in order to apply to my research paper. However it may be pulling my paper much to broadly, and expanding the topic to more then it’s already made up to be. However I do find the information in this study and article to be relative and something that most people would be very interested in in hearing.

Source 7:

Psychologists’ attitudes and ethical concerns regarding the use of social networking web sites. (2010). Professional Psychology: Research and Practice, 2010, Vol. 41(2), P.153-159, 41(2), 153-159.
This article talks about surveying psychology graduate students, and the way in which they use social networking sites. The survey in which students participated has several areas to it such as surveying, and self-monitoring. This study allowed students to make their own assessment on their social networking usage, which may or may not have been a bias answer, or could have caused them to answer untruthfully.
In regards to other articles I have found, I feel that this could easily fit into a category along with them, which would help to build a paper off of what all the articles have been saying about the research that has been done, that deals with usage, and personalities of those who use social networking sites, and who uses social networking sites for what purpose.

Assignment 6: Source 4 & 5

Source 4:
Tunick, R. , Mednick, L. , & Conroy, C. (2011). A snapshot of child psychologists' social media activity: Professional and ethical practice implications and recommendations. Professional Psychology, Research & Practice, 42(6), 440-447.
This article talks about how social networking and the regards to online access for information that is available at the click of a mouse. This article discusses professionalism as it applies to social networking sites, as well as dilemmas ethically and professionally as it relates to the digital age. Relevant to my previous source (source 3) this source also talks about how social networking sites break down the distance between professional relationships.
This article relates so closely to my third source and the fact that I found that to be a valuable and very possible source to use. I think this source also has equal relevance to my topic, or future topic as the way in which the third source also related, which was a way in order to present some of the negative figures of social networking sites. I also think that the dilemmas that this article brings up, are very valid and could help to argue both points of social networking.

Source 5:

SCOTT, D. (2011). Be an agent of change. EContent, 34(10), 40.

This article very much talks about the importance of social networking, and the way in which it connects people. At the beginning of this article the author talks about how we are currently living in a communication revolution. The author also talks about how the bosses out there that resist change, and don’t want social networking to be involved with the work place, have in returned loosened success, and cut themselves off from what could be. This article talks much about how social networking is a great place for advertisement and getting noticed. The author also says that he is convinced that social networking improves professional and personal lives through engagement with people.
I think this is a very important article, and brings up a positive point about social networking, and the connections that can be made, and advertising that can be done, all at the same time just from a social networking site. I think this is an aspect not typically thought about, and therefore I think it would be something great to bring up in a research paper, based off of the whole idea of social networking and how it has impacted the current lifestyles.

Assignment 6: Source 2 & 3

Source 2:
Kuss, Daria J, and Mark D Griffiths. "Online Social Networking and Addiction—A Review of the Psychological Literature." International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2011, Vol.8(9), P.3528-3552, 8.9 (2011): 3528-3552.

This article talks about the way that Social Networking Sites (SNS) have most definitely became a huge part of our every day lives. Within this article, it talks about the way that social networking has completely taken over in the sense that there are many types of addiction that can occur. This article also makes note there is limited scientific research that addresses the addictive qualities that are presented within social networking and the Internet. This article also compares the way that younger generations use social networking sites, versus the way that older generations are using them. This article also touches on how social networking sites connect to personality as well as self-esteem.
Over all I found this to be a great source and something I can definitely see myself using in order to complete this research project. Not only, do I find the information within it to be thorough, but I also find the information to be quite informative and the research only by guess, however I can understand how it could be quite accurate. Needless to say, I think that the information coming from this source will be very valuable within my research process, and I feel like this is all information that directly relate to the topic at hand.

Source 3:
Psychologists’ attitudes and ethical concerns regarding the use of social networking web sites. (2010). Professional Psychology: Research and Practice, 2010, Vol. 41(2), P.153-159, 41(2), 153-159.
Where as my previous articles discussed more so the positives that were involved with social networking sites and internet usage this article takes a different approach. This article views social networking sites, and internet usage to be a much more negative concept. This article discusses how in which the internet is used for many things besides social networking such as searching for various amounts of information, and the way that people can find information on another, and so on. This article takes time to talk about how social networking sites can be invasive and cut down the amount of privacy someone has from certain people, as well as the pressures it brings when deciding whether to “friend” or “ignore/ reject” the other. This article talks about this interaction between psychologist and clients, and how in which the client/ psychologist bond can be broken so that clients can see into the psychologist personal life and information.
I think that this article can be useful for my research paper if I choose to you use it because it would be a completely different view on social networking then the previous articles that I have picked up. Where as my other articles refer to social networking sites as more of a positive, I feel like this article views social networking, and profiles on those sites to be intrusive, unprofessional and impressionable to the point where the gap between professional relationships such as teacher-student, boss- employee, and other similar relationships has significantly reduced.

Assignment 5

Task 1: Why has social networking become so important to our everyday lives?
à Why has the importance of social networking increased within today’s society?
I think this new revision of this question, brings together a number of things. In the first version I am merely asking why social networking is important to us. However, within the first revision, I feel that this question now has a broader range, and a better possibility of asking more questions within it. Some of those further questions may include something along the lines of “What age may be too young to be apart of a social networking situation?” “ Is social networking a positive or negative within the realm of education?” “Who should and shouldn’t be allowed on social networking sites” and so on and so forth. I definitely feel like the topic of social networking is a reasonable one in which is great for research, and finding out more about one of the most common, and most useful ways of communication within today’s society.
Task 2: society, social networking, connection, increasing, popularity
*Social networking popularity*
à In a source I found based off of social networking use, comparing two studies to one another, I have found that the basis of my research can become much deeper then I originally had thought and planned. This article I have found compares the frequency of Facebook usage to that of introverts vs. extroverts and their difference in Facebook activity. There have been hypothesis based off of online and offline behavior and how they relate to one another. This study had a lot to do with that of the connection between personality and social- networking based behavior, specifically that of Facebook.
à With the use of this article, and others related to it, I can continue to build my knowledge of information based off of social networking sites, and how they reflect that of the personality, as well as the social engagement level of its users, and what they use it for. Articles like this one can help to build a basis off of what people are really using facebook and other social networking sites for, and how they compare to how others in return use it, and what they use it for, whether for business or pleasure, or if they use it as a combination of both, as well as an outlet for their social structure, and further socialization outside of personal engagement with others.
